VOXPOP 'The best way to move forward is to convert KL into its own state, with its own state legislative assembly and a governor...'
Putrajaya should return Kuala Lumpur to Selangor
Iomar: I have always thought that KL should be reverted to Selangor, for example the name Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur would then make sense.
Fogbom: I remember seeing on TV at the time, the Sultan of Selangor (father of the present sultan) seemed to be weeping at the signing ceremony to federalise the city. Kuala Lumpur was the crown jewel in the state of Selangor. Remember this happened after May 1969, when Selangor state was nearly ‘lost' to the then opposition.
The making of the Federal Territories was all because Umno/BN wanted to (a) marginalise the Chinese/Indians of KL, to create giant constituencies to dilute their voting power, (b) to prevent Selangor, the richest state then and now, from ever falling into opposition hands.
Well, (b) has failed twice since March 2008 and 505. I reckon after GE14, this lacuna in good and fair governance can be remedied. Selangor should then pay back a one-time lump sum to Putrajaya to reflect the recovery and also the undervaluation of Putrajaya.
But Putrajaya should remain as a Federal Territory. The residents of KL would then get a bonus to be able to vote both at state and federal levels.
Ronald: What a splendid idea. Having lived in KL all my life, and having observed the performance of the two different administrations, I do think that it is best KL be returned to Selangor.
Ex-wfw: Anyway, the federal government needs only one capital. His Royal Highness should formally request for the return of KL to Selangor.
Spinnot: Labuan should also be returned to Sabah. I don't see any reason why that island of Sabah has to be a federal territory.
Franco: Giving back KL to Selangor is like going back in time, like giving Hong Kong and Macau to China. The best way to move forward is to convert KL into its own state, ie, having its own state legislative assembly and put a governor as the head of state, like in Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak.
This is in fact what Singapore would have been if it had not been chased out of the country. This way, we can have our own state government and vote for our own assemblypersons, who would at least look into the plight of KLites, instead of just the MPs who seem to be too busy. Or better still, bring back the local government elections.
Anonymous #02382443: I agree with Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San. KL no longer serves the purpose for which is was conceded. For this, it must be returned to its rightful owner.
Robbed: Yes, it is about time the Selangor state government administers Kuala Lumpur as the federal government is busy with national matters. At least we can save more by kicking out waste collector Alam Flora and others.
Ksn: This a most fair request now that we have the monster of Putrajaya, legacy of the US$44 billion man, at a godforsaken place and distance.
Speechless: They should ask the people of Kuala Lumpur what they think of the idea. Have a referendum.
'11 times more new citizens in Sabah than in Sarawak'
Sang Kancil: This is an absolute disgrace, especially when you have people who are born in Malaysia and living here for years being denied citizenship! We have to thank former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his ill-conceived idea of ethnic social engineering to get votes.
Puteri Malaysia: But the Chinese and Indians came here before Merdeka! There are many still struggling to get citizenship. What an insult. At least you should have asked these people to go to Sabah and give them citizenship there, instead of dragging and dragging the issue for the original rakyat, who are treated as your slaves.
Touche: All reasons given by the government for this phenomenon are rubbish. The only reason why there is a huge increase in the case of Sabah is because of Project IC by the evil Mahathir to (i) use Sabah as a safe deposit to retain power over Malaysia and (2) dilute the mainly Christian indigenous population of Sabah to make Muslims a majority, using imported foreigners, as Mahathir is the father of racism.
All Sabahans should demonstrate to demand that recent immigrants be reviewed and citizenship be revoked if the requirements are not met.
Gibran: This is the fault of the immigration policy of Peninsular Malaysia towards Sabah. The aim was to dilute the local Christian population. As far as Umno is concerned, everything it does must have a racial undertone. The whole race game that Umno always plays is going to backfire on it.
Anonymous67: I recall when Utusan Malaysia quoted a Filipino news report linking the PKR de facto leader to the Lahad Datu incident, the report also said there were 800,000 Filipinos in Sabah. How did conducting officer Manoj Kurup come up with the measly figure of 66,000?
Malaysianist: Sarawak immigration is much tighter. There can only be so many people you can let in, depending on your policy. Say, 500 a year, depending on qualifications, years in Malaysia and so on.
For your information, the Sarawak Immigration Department head's wife herself is still only holding PR status. Whereas in Sabah, you can't even tell who is a real Sabahan and who is an immigrant anymore. Anyhow, it won't be just Bangladeshis by the next GE. The BN will probably be using dogs and cats for voting.
Spinnot: The problem in Sabah is ineligible illegal immigrants have been given citizenship. A large number of illegal immigrants is another matter, but they would remain illegal immigrants if the government hadn't give them citizenship.
JomUbahUbah: This shows that all corrupt Umno and BN leaders in Sabah have committed treason. All Malaysians believe that around 100,000 illegal immigrants in Selangor have been turned into Malaysian citizens by corrupt Umno and BN.
CSSean: Only 66,000 illegals? The other day, I saw a pretty funny comment about an easier way to obtain Malaysian citizenship.
For those Indians or Chinese who have yet to receive Malaysian citizenship after living here for decades, a better option is to apply for Bangladeshi citizenship, then later convert to become Malaysian. That would be faster.
