The chief executive officer of JKP Sdn Bhd, the owner of Menara Umno, said the company was willing to be taken to court if it was found to be negligent in failing to submit a periodical building audit to the local council.

azlan Adzmi Ariffin said the company was also conducting an internal investigation into the alleged failure to submit the report to the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) in 2008.

"We are doing our own inquiry to see if there was any negligence on the part of our staff for failing to submit the periodical audit to MPPP. If MPPP finds that we made a mistake then we have no choice but to respect the law and be taken to court," he said.

Adzmi said the company bought over the building in 2005 but did not realise that it must submit an audit report to the local council when the building reached its 10th year.

He told a press conference a report on the investigation into the collapsed lightning arrester pole would be submitted to the state government next week.

"Our civil and structure consultants, Tahir and Wong Sdn Bhd, have started their investigation," he said.

"It would be completed by next week. Then, we would submit the report to MPPP. We want to put it on record that we bought over the building in 2005."

Before that, he said, the 21-storey building was owned by Amanah Capital Berhad which bought it from the developer, SEA Development Corporation Berhad.

State Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman said the building, designed by the architect firm of TR Hamzah and Yeang, won the Royal Australian Institute of Architects International Award in 1998.

"The certificate for fitness that was signed by then MPPP building department director Patahiyah Ismail was received on July 27, 1998, and then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, opened it on Aug 11 that year," he said.

"The interesting part about this building is that it had a wind consultant from Australia, who determined the wind speed on normal circumstances."
