Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that he did not specifically mention that non-Muslims had belittled and mocked Islam of late, in his widely reported July 30 speech.

In a clarification piece by Bernama , Muhyiddin said he was only making a general statement.

"Certain parties have belittled and mocked our religion lately and hopefully it will not persist as to cause tension, as what is happening in other Islamic countries," Muhyiddin was quoted at saying during the July 30 function in Bernama's clarification piece today.

Muhyiddin also denied specifically referring to a controversial YouTube video clip of a dog trainer presenting an Aidilfitri greeting during the same speech.

On July 31, news organisations such as NST had quoted Muhyiddin mentioning "another disturbing video clip" which he claimed was insensitive to Muslim sensitivities.

"Is this a manifestation of the assumption by some quarters that we (Muslims) are weak and that they could walk all over us? Or that we are afraid to react when others insult the sanctity of Islam?

"Could they be simply ignorant and not understand the values of faith? No Muslim has made fun of other faiths."

NST and Sin Chew Daily had specifically mentioned that Muhyiddin was referring to video clip featuring the dog trainer.

Critics of the speech had slammed Muhyiddin for jumping the gun and suggesting that the person behind the video clip was a non-Muslim, based on his quotes.

Eventually, it was revealed that the dog trainer was in fact a Muslim woman named Maznah Yusof, who is now under investigation by the police.
