The Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) will set up an inquiry panel committee as soon as possible to gather all information on the accident at Genting Highlands which killed 37 people last week.

Spad chairperson Syed Hamid Albar said currently the commission was waiting for the investigation report on the accident from the various agencies responsible.

“Right now, we are waiting for all the reports and we will set up the inquiry panel committee that will gather (the various reports) from the agencies responsible for investigating the tragedy.

“We want to set up (the inquiry panel committee) as soon as possible, so that we can prepare the terms of reference for (members of) the panel,” he told reporters after attending a briefing on the 1Malaysia Taxi Scheme in Johor Baru today.

In the accident, an express bus plunged 60 metres down a ravine at Km3.5 Genting Highlands last week which also resulted in 16 other passengers sustaining severe injuries.

It was among the worst traffic accidents reported in the country.

Syed Hamid said with the setting up of the inquiry panel committee soon, he hoped it could make a comprehensive proposal to the government.

He said the committee must submit its report to Spad, before the commission could submit it to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, he said.

If there was a case to charge anyone, the committee would submit an investigation paper to the Attorney-General’s chambers to decide on the next course of action.

“If there is a case, we will hand over the IP (investigation papers) to the AG (attorney-general) to make a decision,” said Syed Hamid.
