Flying the Sang Saka Malaya flag is an “affront to a national symbol as well as the country’s dignity”, right wing group Perkasa said.

Its information chief Ruslan Kassim said that as such, the activists who did so in a Merdeka celebration last Friday are not worthy of being called citizens.

“Failure to take stern action is akin to saying that the act (the flying of the Sang Saka Malaya) is correct, and that people who did so will be idolised by the young who do not understand the meaning of history and the independence struggle,” he was quoted by Utusan Malaysia as saying.

The flag, first raised by leftist independence group Putera-AMCJA in 1947, was raised again by activist Hishamuddin Rais during a Merdeka eve celebration at Dataran Merdeka.

Hishamuddin, fellow activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim and national laureate A Samad Said are under investigation for this under the Sedition Act 1948.

All three were released after their statements were taken.

Utusan also reported that police are studying the video of the incident uploaded online to determine if other individuals were involved.
