MCA YOUTH AGM Candidates from two rival factions have both made significant gains at the MCA Youth elections that concluded this evening, with each getting a share of the top positions contested.

MCA education bureau chief Chong Sin Woon, aligned with party deputy president Liow Tiong Lai, has edged out his rival Goh Gaik Meng to become the new MCA Youth chairperson with a slim margin of 93 votes.

Chong managed to garner 794 votes against the Batu division youth chief’s 701 votes, the latter being aligned with incumbent party president Dr Chua Soi Lek.

NONE Meanwhile, pro-Chua Bakri Youth chief Lee Ching Yong defeated Perak Youth chief Ting Tai Fook to become the wing’s deputy chairperson, garnering 844 votes and 650 votes respectively.

Both factions also each won two of the four vice-president positions contested. On one side were Tia Hong Guan and Tan Chee Hiong from Liow’s camp, while the remaining two winners were Nicole Wong ( right ) and Tan Kok Eng from Chua’s camp.

However, Liow’s faction won at the central committee level with a landslide, bagging 22 out of 25 positions up for grabs.

Close ranks

Commenting on the results, outgoing MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong, who is aligned with the Liow faction, said the presence of both sides in the leadership shows that the delegates are smart.

He said he hopes the new leaders would learn from the election that MCA is a party that can accept differences, close ranks, and work together, including with candidates who lost the election.

"They have made their choice. I think it was a good fight between Chong and Goh. They showed their leadership qualities and eventually the delegates have decided, so we have to respect the decision of the central delegates," he added.

However when asked, he said the results today will have no bearing on the outcome of the party’s central election on Saturday.

He said this is because the older cadre of delegates voting in two days would go to the polls with different considerations in mind compared to the younger delegates who voted today.
