Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia's (SAMM) Sarawak wing has warned that it will mobilise a "large movement" to campaign and prevent outgoing Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud from becoming the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

Sarawak SAMM coordinator Azan Akma said in a statement today appointing Taib as the head of state would further limit any possible action that could be taken against him on allegations of corruption and misuse of power.

"If this happens, every legal action on misconduct that has been alleged against Taib will become more difficult and limited. Being the Yang di-Pertua Negeri will make Taib more immune, so maybe this is the idea (behind the move)," Azan suggested.

He added that Sarawak SAMM would work to prevent any effort to appoint a new state governor against whom there are allegations of corruption, including those involved in "stealing Sarawak's natural resources for dozens of years".

This follows PAS Youth's announcement recently that it would be submitting a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over Taib's proposed appointment as the Sarawak head of state.

PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat said the wing took this matter seriously because Taib has been linked with corruption and misuse of power in his 33-year reign as Sarawak chief minister.

Meanwhile, Sarawak PAS Youth chief Arifiriazul Paijo also urged Taib be cleared from all corruption allegations before being allowed to take over as state governor.

Arifiriazul is calling on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to complete investigations on Taib's alleged corrupt practices and misuse of power in the state before the latter can assume the post.
