YOURSAY ‘Might as well send all opposition MPs to jail. Save taxpayers' money.’
Karpal fined RM4,000 for sedition, to appeal
Mohican:
If public interest is taken into consideration, then a fine that does not disqualify Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh should have been imposed. This has now turned into a public nuisance, for a by-election has to be held all over again.Tikusmati: They always talk about public interest. What public interest is there in this case? Who has actually been insulted by the said comments of Karpal. It cannot be the public, as they have no interest in this. Who then, can it be?
RR: It is abundantly clear that this country has lost the separation of powers between the government, the police, the army and most sadly, the judiciary. When Umno sneezes, all these agencies are inflicted with cold.
In the case of Karpal, even if he is found guilty of sedition, the fine can judiciously be less than RM2,000 to respect his stature as an exemplary national politician.
The same goes for Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who was tried and convicted under an archaic law on sodomy, which has been abandoned by most countries when such sex is consensual.
Anwar was fined a whopping RM5,000 plus jail. There is absolutely no jurisprudence and righteousness but political bias in these decisions.
Awang Top: Might as well send all opposition MPs to jail. Save taxpayers' money.
Lamborghini: What is legally or technically wrong can be morally right. But what is morally wrong can never be legally right. As an MP and a lawyer, surely, it can't be seditious for a senior lawyer to express his considered opinion about a law that had serious public consequences.
And if this is found to be seditious, then why are others like Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, who have uttered seditious statements blatantly and contemptuously repeatedly, not been charged in court and sentenced?
As a Malaysian citizen, I am utterly disgusted by the partiality and the lack of integrity of our judicial system.
Oracle: As Raja Petra Kamaruddin is fond of saying, with justification I must ask, "where did these people get their degrees from?" The charging of Karpal for sedition was delusional and the conviction of Karpal was preposterous.
SteveOh: Another dark day for Malaysia. Another political martyr is made. Hold your head high Karpal for in the eyes of the people you are a hero.
Pputeh: I think this will mean the "Tiger of Jelutong" will be disqualified from being an MP. So now another by-election, and who caused this? BN.
Mistake: I am still wondering what is right to say and what is not. It all depends on the interpretation, right?
BOYCOTT MSM: Karpal's crime is by expressing an opinion that the Sultan of Perak can be taken to court. I just cannot believe our judiciary reached this level. This is the biggest mockery of justice.
Hplooi: Words cannot describe the sense of outrage over the current slew of court rulings that have been commandeered by the ruling elite. Whither natural justice.
Anonymous #95676433: If Karpal is guilty because he gave his opinion, does that mean that "sedition" cannot be discussed at all, even in universities in Malaysia?
Chris Wong: Thanks Mr Attorney-General and Umno for galvanising Malaysians to take action against a totally incorrigible regime that twists the law to mete out injustice.
AngryBird: Stupidity of the highest order. I do not have anymore faith and confidence in the Kangkung government and the judiciary. Judiciary is being used to silence dissent.
CiViC: Two down, next is DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and his son, Lim Guan Eng.
CQ MUAR: Injustice by 'justice' at its height. Let the whole world see and evaluate what the ruling government represents. Despite such acts of tyranny, deceipt and heightened corruption, the government of the day continues to abuse and incriminate the innoccent.
Under such governance, how Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak shamelessly addresses dignitaries of other countries absent of any guilt is a wonder. The rakyat, regardless of race and creed, must stand up to such realities and prevent such provocations of justice in this nation we love.
For your sake, your children’s and the country's future, it's high time to stop this. We must not allow such acts of gross injustice to dominate and deprive us of democracy, freedom and rights as loyal citizens, regardless of ethnicity. One must stay true to our conscience and honour, and rid those leaders from taking advantage and escaping with their distorted regime
Versey: Theodore Roosevelt said: "No greater wrong can ever be done than to put a good man at the mercy of a bad, while telling him not to defend himself or his fellows; in no way can the success of evil be made surer or quicker."
Indeed, in the eyes of all thinking people, Karpal is the conscience of this society, a hero. We love you, respect you and are with you.
Anonymous #22878930: The judiciary has reconfirmed its status yet again. Pity Malaysia.
Penang Lion: Rise up! Rise up all Penangites and especially Malaysians, to provide our fullest support to Tiger of Jelutong Karpal Singh. We must change the Malaysian Palace of Justice.
Worried Sick: In or out of Parliament, the 'Lion' will not cease his roars. God bless our 'Lion'. Can anyone just imagine what injustices would have befallen this beautiful nation if not for patriots like this man? Pray for him, please.
Anonymous #47435535: How do you describe a situation beyond "gone case"? That’s where we are now, regressing further and further.
