With no leadership from PM, sultan must step in

YOURSAY ‘These two bodies are trying to implicate the palace in this matter.’

Mais defies exco, refuses to return seized Bibles

Quigonbond: Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) a law unto itself? For Mais to come out so strongly to defy both federal and state government, they must think they have a mountain behind them.

Surely the officials there were appointed either by the federal authorities or the state authorities.

It cannot be said that the Selangor sultan has all the power on the appointments because clearly that notion has been beaten back even in Johor where the state ruler probably has the strongest clout amongst all state rulers.

The sultan acts on advice of the menteri besar on all matters. The state government will be terribly remiss if they continue to let this sad state of affairs continue.

It's either the Mais officials toe the state government line, which they are now openly defying, or they should be sacked or transferred.

Daniel: Mais and Jais are creatures of Selangor state enactments. They have now disavowed being under the Selangor government authority and instead claims to be under the authority of HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

These two bodies must be considered renegade and trying to implicate the palace in this matter.

If so, it is therefore only right that the state must cut its ties and financial support to these two runaway bodies and eventually dissolve them as they do not answer to the state's authority and enactments from which they were first created.

Wiser: PM, you are allowing all these little Napoleons to make a mockery of your government. Sadly, it reflects so badly on your capability to be a leader the country needs.

Those who ever doubted your sole intention is to remain in power for self-interest rather than to lead Malaysia out of the racial, religious and economic mess would now realise they were wrong.

Who fears the courts now? Who fears the law? These little Napoleons are above the law?

These minority bigots must be brought to heel. Or history will show how Malaysia went down caused by people with self-interest and the PM did nothing.

Ex-PJ: The bibles were seized illegally and now they want a legal directive? They are just following the example set by the IGP (inspector-general of police).

Ignore the AG, as the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) will not enforce the law. This is another step towards anarchy. Thank you Najib for your leadership.

Not Convinced: Since Najib is not providing the leadership that the country sorely needs, will the sultan please put an end to this madness?

Anonymous #70881335: If society do not stand by its laws, then anarchy will reign. Then what?

From royalty to the man in the streets, laws are the framework where society functions and progresses. If there are no laws, then society will crumble and destroys itself. If the laws is bad change it, but until then, abide by it.

Lim Chong Leong: These are Umno agents out to create havoc and racial tension for the sole purpose of giving Umno a reason to exist. So do not be taken in and even think for one second that Pakatan Rakyat has anything to do about it.

RR: The fault lies with the attorney-general (AG). As the public prosecutor when he closed the case, he should have ordered the return of the bibles within 14 days and not give the option to Mais and Jais to use their discretion in returning the bibles.

Now they are using their discretion to defy any law of the land and making the country a laughing stock in the eyes of the world. Yes, the government has given too much face and room to Islamists.

Hence we are now facing some of them being trained as terrorists and suicide bombers owing to Islamic fanaticism. The police has just apprehended a Navy officer in regard to this.

It is really frightening to note the hatred syndrome developed in this country. The cabinet should preach “love all and serve all” as all are God's children.

Toffeesturn: Is there rule of law in this country, or are we drifting into or already in a state of anarchy?

Seizing bibles, snatching dead bodies, attacking transgender persons at a Muslim wedding, blatantly refusing to adhere to an order of the court regarding the custody of children born out of civil wedding for which the Syariah Court takes an opposite decision, whilst the police either wait and watch or go along with these people who behave more like gangsters and terrorists not very much different from our own police force.

Now that they even dare to defy the AG, what next?

This is the result of compromised national leadership. When the offices of the national leadership is compromised, the entire system is, and history will teach us that it is these types of leaders who will contribute to the downfall of nations and even empires.

Wira: Now that Mais has shown the middle finger to both the AG and the Selangor exco, I suggest the Selangor government should study to amend the state constitution so that Mais and Jais can be made subservient to it.

Anak JB: I respect one's belief in God and I have no problem with that. I have a problem with people invoking God's name to cause suffering, to separate families, to prevent marriages, to gate crash, to confiscate other religion holy book and to snatch corpses.

The problem with our religious authorities are their overzealous belief that they are the enforcers for God and doing God's work, that what they are doing is God-sanctioned.

The truth is, one will never know unless one has been to heaven, met God and came back to earth. I find this as a form of religious hegemony and a superiority complex perhaps instilled by the sense of inferiority.

It does not augur well for racial and religious harmony in Malaysia.

Peacemaker: Will the AG do his duty under the constitution and charge the head of Jais with theft of the bibles. Since theft carries a jail term of seven years and whipping, it'll be fun to see Jais being punished.
