Panic reigned on an AirAsia flight when it skidded on the runway while landing at the Brunei International Airport at approximately 4pm today.

Confirming the incident, AirAsia stressed that all 102 passengers and seven crew aboard AK278 were not hurt during the landing.

However, it said one passenger sustained slight injury during the evacuation process.

According to a passenger, chaos broke out due to a flight attendant who urged passengers to run out of the cabin.

"The steward made the whole situation worse. He shouted 'run, run, run!'

"That was when we all fell and stepped on each other before we slid down from the plane and ran to the field," he told Malaysiakini on condition of anonymity.

He added that the passengers started panicking again when the door of the bus transporting them from the runway could not open.

"The worse part was that something was burning and everyone screamed like hell once again.

"We managed to get out of the bus but we were all wet from the rain," he said.

However, in a statement, AirAsia said that the evacuation process was done in an orderly fashion.

"A safe landing was made before the aircraft skidded off to the right hand side of the runway.

"An evacuation of the passengers was perfrmed in an orderly manner by the crew, as soon as the surrounding areas and conditions were determined to be safe with one passenger experiencing a slight injury from it," it said.

It said that it was raining with slight gust when the incident happened.

Pictures of the incident circulating on the internet shows the aircraft in a field beside the runway, with emergency slides deployed and tyres encased in mud.

AirAsia said ground personnel are attending to the passengers, while its flights to and from Bandar Seri Begawan will proceed as normal tomorrow.

"Our team is working with the relevant authorities to identify the root cause of this incident, and AirAsia will provide further updates when necessary," it said.

Meanwhile, Brunei Times reported that all flights departing the airport have been delayed while incoming traffic has been diverted.
