YOURSAY ‘Where is Liow Tiong Lai, the backdoor transport minister from MCA?’

MRT Corp CEO resigns over fatal accident

Quigonbond: I think the MRT Corp board needs to determine whether there is anyone else who can do a better job than CEO Azhar Abdul Hamid.

If yes and they can get the replacement, then it's fine. I haven't heard anything negative about this CEO - it seems like he's been earning an honest living.

I hate to see people like this go. There is also concerns that if he goes, would some crony CEO take over and try to gain from project overrun and the escalation of cost?

Perhaps Azhar might have been feeling frustrated that he had been obstructed by inefficiencies, corruption, etc, that he wanted to go, and this was just a perfect excuse to call it quits.

Hafidz Baharom: As a person who has worked with Azhar when he was with Sime Darby Plantation, it is within his character to do so even in those days.

However, I wish he would reconsider his resignation. We do not have enough leaders in the public sector who are willing to transparently claim responsibility in the light of Monday's tragedy.

Seriously, Datuk Azhar, you have shown your integrity. I hope you will reconsider the resignation.

Anj2208: I know this man from my days in Sime Darby Plantation. He is known for his high integrity, no-nonsense and a good-hearted person.

Politics aside, those who doesn’t know him personally, let's not make unnecessary accusation or assumption. He is indeed a rare breed and well respected when in Sime Darby.

Swipenter: Unlike the Umno Baru-BN politicians, Azhar did the right thing by taking responsibility for the spate of accidents in the ongoing construction of MRT.

In normal circumstances, the bug stops at the desk of the boss but our ruling politicians and their lackeys don't believe in that.

Where is Liow Tiong Lai, the backdoor transport minister from MCA? There is not one word from him yet. He should follow Azhar’s example and resign too.

Blue Forest: Azhar has set the standard of accountability for all our politicians and ministers to follow. He did not evade responsibility by blaming his lower level staff or subcontractors. He fully understood that as CEO he has to take full ownership of this mishap.

Azhar has taken an honourable action to resign. Will our ministers do the same when their ministries foul up?

Chris Wong: Azhar has indeed shown what accountability means. People sometimes confuse the meaning of accountability and responsibility. Azhar understands both. And I respect his action and be an example to all.

Now we need to go after those who are truly responsible for this incident.

Rakyat-in-Grief: Hats off to you, Azhar, for your courage and integrity in accepting the full responsibility for the mishap where three innocent lives were lost.

You are the first Malaysian to show the country and the world that all Malaysian bosses are not selfish cowards like the MAS chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya. Your family can be proud of you.

Not Smart: Datuk Azhar, not only you bring good name to yourself, you have also brought a great name to your family, parents and those who guided you.

You are an excellent example of a responsible and an accountable person and will be remembered and mentioned for a long long time. May the Almighty bless you and your family always. Ameen.

Whatsup: Our condolences to the victims' families and at the same time our admiration to Azhar for being a gentlemen and a true leader. May we wish Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim and Umno leaders learn from you.

Jafar al-Sadiq: This man is great, I never expected a man so close to the Umno top brass to take such a decision. This beats me, but he is surely one of a kind.

PM Najib Razak should follow his example. Not only Najib, but many of his ministers too.

Vijay47: Almost every comment here seems to reflect some measure of shock and disbelief.

Apart from our sympathies to the three workers and their families, we are all stumped that an officer of the company involved, the CEO no less, has acknowledged responsibility for the tragedy and immediately resigned from his post. This is something we Malaysians have never encountered.

Numerous wretches should have resigned for major failures occurring under their watch.

Names that readily come to mind include ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammuddin Hussein, Muhyuddin Yassin, MAS chief Ahmad Jauhari, and even or especially Najib.

But what we have consistently got was miserable, shameful, and spineless excuses and transfer of blame.

To you, Azhar Abdul Hamid, you have our utmost respect and admiration. Let us hope that this single swallow is the portent of a summer of accountability and responsibility.

Ex-MRT Corp Azhar truly a rare breed
