Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has urged "right-thinking Malaysians" to speak out against the ongoing Sedition Act crackdown.

"Malaysians must not allow another tragedy to happen and more NGOs must speak out against the sedition blitz," she said in a statement today.

Commending the launch of the Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan (GHAH) movement and the Malaysian Bar which had passed a motion to organise a peaceful protest against the Sedition Act, she expressed hope for more NGOs to follow suit.

The DAP leader said doing so would enable Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to see the people’s resolve that the Act had to be abolished.

She then claimed that it was obvious that the prime minister was not prepared to stop the sedition blitz anytime soon.

Comparing the current situation to the 1987 Operasi Lalang where 108 people were detained under the Internal Security Act, she queried how many more would be arrested in the new crackdown.

"The 1987 Ops Lalang was a tragedy that stifled the healthy development of the country's democracy for many years.

"The Sedition Act crackdown, meanwhile, has certainly made the prime minister's 2012 promise to repeal the Act and his 2013 talk about political reconciliation sound hollow and insincere," she added.

Approximately 30 people have been hauled up under the Sedition Act, with victims ranging from politicians to activists.

The latest conviction saw activist Adam Adli Abd Halim being slapped with a 12-month jail sentence.
