After leading a rally of about 2,000 students and supporters at Universiti Malaya, UM Students Association (PMUM) president Fahmi Zainol says he is still “safe” from disciplinary action.

"I am safe for now," he said when contacted.

However, Bernama reported that UM has commenced an internal investigation on the students involved in the rally.

The national newswire reported that UM lodged a police report at the Pantai police station this morning.

Students yesterday barged through UM’s locked Kuala Lumpur gate to hear PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim speak. 

Anwar spoke at around 10pm at the PMUM-organised 'Anwar Ibrahim: 40 Years From UM to Prison' talk.

Fahmi, who also leads the student council, was on Oct 23 also issued a showcause letter for refusing to cancel the event despite not getting UM approval.

"I did not manage to reply," he said, noting that the 24-hour deadline was during semester break.

The university had sought that he hand deliver his reply to the letter.

He was threatened with expulsion.

Chained-up university

The event yesterday also received the support of the UM Academic Union, who called on the university to ensure the safety of the event.

Also spotted at the rally was union president and law lecturer Azmi Sharom.

Azmi , who was at the centre of an earlier rally UM against his sedition charge, said he was there yesterday as an observer.

The rally also received a thumbs up from Faculty of Economics and Administration senior lecturer Lee Hwok-Aun.

"While UM's gate is the bigger object in the frame, the only thing that people broke last night was the chain that was locking down this public university," he wrote on Facebook.
