On religious issues, gov’t is hard at hearing

YOURSAY ‘We don’t expect as usual one word from Umno to condemn them.’

'New church on land zoned for non-Muslims'

Ferdtan: There goes the three Rs again; the playing up on royalty, race and religion by these troublemakers before the Umno AGM.

The whole nation knows who the mischief makers are and yet our PM and his ‘helpless’ government are silent as if they are hard at hearing. We don’t expect as usual one word from the Umno government to condemn them.

Most possibly, some of the protesters are also members of Umno. Where are MCA, MIC, Gerakan and the Sabah and Sarawak Christian BN leaders? We are really fed-up with the government for not condemning these bat hats for unnecessarily causing religious mischief.

First, when Pakatan Rakyat took over Selangor, we had a similar kind of protest on Aug 28, 2009, infamously known as the ‘cow head’ protest . The story is the same one; except this time instead of involving a Hindu temple it is now a Christian church.

The cow is considered a sacred animal to Hindus and the cow’s head brought by the protesters in the protest in 2009 was desecrated. Like in this case, they said that the Hindu temple was too near to the area, Section 23 in Shah Alam, which they claimed to be a Muslim-majority area.

In my area, we have over 90 percent non-Muslims. We have a surau but there were no protests from the residents.

Are the Muslims in Malaysia becoming that intransigent conservative (mildly put) that they cannot stand the ‘sight’ of holy premises of other religions?

Jiminy Qrikert: Well done, Selangor exco member and Seri Setia state assemblyperson Nik Nazmi. We need more Malay leaders like you speaking up for justice, equality and fair play.

Only when this happens will the average Malay have the courage to break the shackles that Umno has locked his mind and heart in.

2Kali5: Pro-tem Committee against the Construction of PJS8 Church leader Ishak Maarof, if we go by your argument, the non-Muslims all over UK and Australia should be asking that all the mosques in predominantly non-Muslim areas, be demolished?

Do you know that the grand mosque in Paris was built by the French government in the heart of Paris, a city dominated by Christians? When are you going to shed your village mentality?

Shathriyan: If your faith in your religion is strong, why are you frighten of other religions? Nearly 90 percent of the Indians in this country are non-Muslims. Yet, several Islamic programmes are broadcast in RTM Tamil channel (radio) from early morning till midnight.

Open preaching is done in a channel which is patronised mostly by non-Muslims. Yet, neither the Hindu nor the Christian Tamils protest against this. Now, tell me who is not being sensitive to other religions?

Tpn: My residential area has more than 90 percent non-Muslim residents and none of us protested at the building of a surau in our vicinity. We did not feel insulted or confused like these people. These people better go join Islamic State or the Taliban.

Anonymous #37634848: This land was allocated to a temple, a church and a surau in the development order years ago. The surau was moved to another site.

There is no need to build a four-storey church building in this small lot. Have a single story church like the surau and the temple. I see why there is a noise. Someone is exploiting the development order issued earlier.

Disbeliever: Each time a non-Muslim house of worship is being built, there will a mountain of issues made out of a molehill.

Why do these Muslims always think that there is a hidden agenda to convert Muslims to Christianity? Are Muslims really that weak in their ‘akidah’ (faith) that they can be easily swayed?

We see mosques, suraus, madrasahs mushrooming everywhere - some hardly 200-300 metres from one another - but the non-Muslims never question this. What is happening to the multiracial, multicultural identity of this country?

The irony of all this is that some Umno ministers, Muslim NGOs such as the likes of Isma and Perkasa will never admit it is their fault even though they are blatantly to be blamed. Instead they accuse the non-Muslims for creating the issue.

The way I see it, this is due to the government's unwillingness to act firmly against the troublemakers, perhaps afraid of being seen as being ‘anti-Islam’.

Wira: So what if that place is 70 percent Muslim? Even if it is 99 percent Muslim, the government should defend the right of the minority to have their places of worship.

1 Melayu 1 Bahasa 1 Malaysia: From what we observed throughout the country whereever there are Muslims, the government will build at least a surau with the rakyat’s money.

A good example is Bario in rural Sarawak where there is only one Muslim convert and the government built a surau for him. The Kelabit in Bario are 99.99 percent Christians.

In the town of Long Lama in Baram, Sarawak, where the population is 98 percent Christians, why did the government build a ‘masjid’ (mosque) right in town on top of a hill overlooking the town?

ConstitutionIsSupreme: Nik Nazmi, well done. This is how a statesman should talk - without mincing one’s words and disregarding the potential damage done to his popularity among certain group/race.

With this, we can see a glimpse of hope in the new generation of Pakatan Rakyat leadership. Let's look forward to more Pakatan younger leaders who share your political righteousness.

Kangkong Mahal: Nik Nazmi, you have just insulted PM Najib Razak and his 1Malaysia.

TAG: To all non-Muslims, surely you don't take a bunch of Malay clowns and nincompoops as representatives of the Muslim community.

A lot of Malaysiakini readers are wasting their time and effort in making their comments. For heaven’s sake, don’t bring yourselves down to their level.

I am a Malay Muslim and I don't bat an eyelid on what these scums of the earth say. Just look at them and how they dressed, surely they cannot represent me.

RSOH: I think more should be done to address mental health issues in Malaysia. It seems like paranoid schizophrenia is spreading like wildfire.
