For Mahathir, ‘we’ means the 47pct who voted BN

YOURSAY ‘He is up to his usual tricks of telling half-truths and outright lies.’

Dr M: US wants Anwar as PM, we don't

Pemerhati: Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is up to his usual tricks of telling half-truths and outright lies.

Just to take one example in this report where he says, “We don't want (Anwar as prime minister)."

In the last elections, Pakatan Rakyat lead by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim got the majority of the popular vote at 51% while his BN got only 47% of the popular vote despite massive fraud and unfair use of the monopolised media.

Mahathir now has the cheek and audacity to try and create the impression that the majority of Malaysians do not want Anwar to be PM.

In fact, if there was no fraud by BN and if the last elections were fairly conducted, Anwar would be prime minister.

Kim Quek: The Anwar sodomy trial has been universally condemned as travesty of justice and sheer political persecution to annihilate Umno’s most-feared challenger to its authoritarian rule.

Together with the recent massive crackdown on opposition leaders and other dissidents using the repressive Sedition Act, which is a leftover of the colonial rule, Malaysia’s rapid plunge towards oppressive rule is viewed with great alarm by the democratic world.

Such abominable development actually forms the background upon which US Vice President Joe Biden gave his friendly admonition to Malaysia.

When human rights and human dignity is heinously trampled, whether it’s the Islamic State atrocities in Iraq and Syria, or ethnic cleansing in Africa, or in this case Malaysia with its brutal crushing of legitimate dissenters, it is the business of every country and every human being, wherever they are, to speak out and oppose such atrocities from continuing.

If a foreign country like United States is now so alarmed by Malaysia’s latest plunge in the rule of law that it’s second highest leader spoke out against it at risk of offending an ally, shouldn’t Malaysians be even more alarmed?

Anonymous 478584007: Mahatma Gandhi secured independence for India. He was vilified in many countries and was assassinated. Today his name is immortalised in stone the world over.

Abraham Lincoln fought against slavery in US and was also assassinated. Indira Gandhi was a powerful leader and she acted with vision and determination yet she was imprisoned a few times and finally assassinated.

Nelson Mandela fought against apartheid regime and was imprisoned for 28 years, after which he became the first black president of South Africa. There are many others in history.

Anwar is the first and only Malay to be recognised and respected worldwide. He has been vilified and tortured for 20 years. Yes, I dare say he will be acquitted by the Federal Court and he will go down in history as the greatest leader Malaysia ever had.

Victor Johan: Tell you what, Mahathir, never mind the Anwar's court verdict, just ask of the present Umno-led government to dissolve the Parliament at the next sitting and call for the 14th General Elections for all parliamentary and state seats, including Sarawak and Sabah, and let ‘we’ decide whom ‘we’ want as PM.

Of course, with no further increase in the number of seats. Be reminded that should Umno rush the judiciary to pass a sentence of guilty on Anwar at the Federal Court before this next general election, the results will further be in favour of Pakatan Rakyat.

You don't believe me? Do it. ‘We’ await.

Anticonmen: Mahathir, both you and Anwar messed up the country when both of you were in power. You messed up governance and accountability and he messed up with religion and his over-zealous Islamisation.

Both of you reneged on the constitution by not treating all Malaysians as equal, denying freedom of religion for all, and denying justice and fair play. We pray both of you pay for your crimes against Malaysians and Malaysia.

It will be a blessing for Malaysia if both of you destroy each other. Karma will play itself out for both of you.

Shibboleth: Biden criticised our Sedition Act, and Mahathir talked about detention and execution of terrorists. They are two different topics really.

Mahathir is being his usual disingenuous self. Malaysians are in favour of detention and punishment of terrorists.

But a politician who "terrorise" the ruling party with exposure of corruption scandals or some sovereign investment scam is not a terrorist.

Mushiro: Mahathir has got the right to say that he (or we) does not want Anwar to be PM. But his 'we' represents 47% or lower of the voters.

As it is, since the last GE in 2013, 51% of voters prefer Anwar for PM - that is very loud and clear. Mahathir's first choice for PM, who is none other than his incapable son Mukhriz, will be an even bigger disaster than PM Najib Razak.

When US President Barack Obama visited Kuala Lumpur recently and during Najib's visits to US this year, it was portrayed by Najib and the government that the US was very close to Najib.

Even the PM’s wife Rosmah Mansor was given special awards by US. How come Mahathir now say that the US prefers Anwar?
