Opposition leader Fadzil Mohd Noor today called on the relevant authorities to take stern action against those involved in the death of KeADILan member and reformasi supporter Mohd Anuar Sharif while in police custody last year.

"We are worried that violence has increasingly become part of our police mentality," Fadzil said.

Fadzil, who is also PAS president, added that Mohd Anuar's death is another black mark on the already stained image of the police force, especially in using violence against Barisan Alternatif supporters.

"His death is seen as yet another act of police violence against the people, following the injuries inflicted on Anwar Ibrahim by former Inspector General of Police Rahim Noor," he said.

Expressing regret, he also said that the party responsible for the death must immediately bear the living costs of Mohd Anuar's wife and children.

"They should accept full responsibility over the death and apologise to the whole nation, especially Mohd Anuar's family," Fadzil said, adding that the police should also conduct a thorough probe on the use of their powers against lock-up detainees.

"We do not want the beatings inflicted upon detainees to reach an extent where death becomes part of police tactics, as this would not bring any justice and benefits to the people. Human lives cannot be replaced," he added.

Mohd Anuar,31, was allegedly beaten to death while in detention at the Selayang police lock-up on Aug 18, last year.

According to his wife, Suzana Md Aris, the police stormed into their home in Batu Caves, Selangor at midnight on Aug 10 and dragged her husband out without an arrest warrant.

The housewife filed a RM682,400 civil lawsuit against the police and government of Malaysia for the death of her husband at the Kuala Lumpur High Court last Friday.
