Abdul Rahman sworn in as Penang Governor

Abdul Rahman Abbas was yesterday sworn in as the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri for a sixth term, effective May 1.

Abdul Rahman, 77, was sworn in before Penang High Court judge Mohd Zaki Md Yasin at Seri Mutiara in George Town.  

Also present were Abdul Rahman's wife Majimor Shariff; Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng; exco members and elected representatives.

Born in Kampung Permatang Rambai, Kepala Batas, Abdul Rahman ( right ) was first appointed Yang di-Pertua Negeri on April 17, 2001.

He received his early education at Sekolah Melayu Permatang Sintok, Kepala Batas from 1946 to 1953, before entering the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College, Tanjung Malim in Perak from 1955 to 1958.

Abdul Rahman, an honours degree holder in literature from Universiti Malaya, was Penang acting chief minister from 1982 to 1984.

The father of four had served as a teacher for 20 years since 1958 before starting his political career in 1977 and won the Bertam state constituency seat in the 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1990 general elections.
