PAS central committee member Hanipa Maidin has suggested debates for all aspiring candidates for the top two posts of president and deputy president in the party’s coming elections.

Hanipa said the debate would allow PAS members and the public as well to evaluate all candidates in terms of achievements, work discipline, honesty and knowledge of issues plaguing the people from all races and religions in the country.

"Of course it's not wrong for PAS to take the spirit and leadership selection model from developed countries, such as the United States and United Kingdom, which have long established the trend of open debates between the candidates for top leadership," the Sepang MP said in a statement today.

Pro-ulama leaders are leading the PAS race for the top posts, with incumbent president Abdul Hadi Awang being far ahead of his closest contender, incumbent vice-president Husam Musa, and former Ulama Council member Ahmad Awang.

Mat Sabu in a tough battle

Incumbent deputy president Mohamad Sabu is facing a tough fight defending his post against incumbent vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

The PAS constitution states that candidates must have a minimum of two nominations to run for any post in the party’s central leadership elections.

More than 1,000 delegates will cast their votes at the party’s annual general assembly (muktamar), to be held in Kuala Selangor next month.

Hanipa, who is seen to be one of the more moderate PAS leaders,  also stated that leadership debates would also convince the people to accept and give a chance to PAS, along with Pakatan Rakyat, in the country's administration.

"A good system, no matter where it is from, can be adopted for our benefit as one hadith (quotes of the prophet) state that 'hikmah (wisdom) is like a lost stuff for Muslims. If they find it, they are qualified to earn it," he said.
