Mt Everest may have shrunk 2.5cm due to quake

Satellite data analysis shows Nepal’s deadly earthquake may have shrunk Mount Everest’s height by about 2.5cm, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The first good view of the aftermath of the quake from a satellite showed a broad swath of ground near Kathmandu had lifted vertically by about one metre which explains why damage in the city was so severe.

Data also indicated the world’s tallest mountain has grown a wee bit shorter, Live Science reported.

The latest information comes from Europe’s Sentinel-1A radar satellite.

Scientists are racing to interpret the Sentinel data made available last week hours after the satellite passed over Nepal.

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on April 25 and has claimed more than 8,000 lives and injured at least 16,000 people.
