Mat Sabu: PAS owed T'ganu win to 'pakatan'

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu has reminded his chief Abdul Hadi Awang that they would not have won the latter's home state Terengganu in the past without an opposition pact.

"(It is when) in 1999 when we joined forces with PKR only (then) could we rule Terengganu.

"That means we only won Terengganu through ' pakatan ' (pact).

"How do we have power? We have to join forces," Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, said at a ceramah in Tumpat, Kelantan yesterday according to Bernama .

Hadi's contender for the party presidency Ahmad Awang was also at the ceramah.

He reminder comes as Hadi, whose relationship with Pakatan Rakyat partners is at breaking point, drew a firm line between those who are "the party loyalists" and those whom he called " DAP sympathisers ".

As the race for party leadership heats up to the muktamar next week, the battle between the conservative ulama faction and the progressives has become one of the most aggressive in PAS' history.

'Even Nik Aziz needed pact'

Mohamad also drew parallels to PAS' failure to capture Kelantan in the 1980s when the state was led by the late Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

"But when PAS joined forces with (Umno splinter party) Semangat 46 against Umno, we recaptured the state assembly and parliamentary seats in Kelantan.

"In other words, even though Nik Aziz was a great man, but in the election, Kelantan could not have been won without cooperating with Semangat 46.

"Meaning, in politics, we must join forces to get more votes, but if we are divided, we will get less votes," he said.

Mohamad, who is facing an uphill battle to defend his deputy presidency against challenger Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said he will ensure PAS remains in Pakatan if he wins.
