Rosmah: If you're young and gifted, we want you

Prime Minister's wife Rosmah Mansor said Permata, an early childhood programme of which she is the patron, is seeking out gifted children under five years old.

To this end, Rosmah said Permata will be setting up a website to test the mental agility of children below the age of five by November, according to Bernama.

"This will enable us to identify a child's intellectual level early, before the child is five years' old.

"Then it will be easy for us to manage the development of the intellectually gifted children," she said at a function with parents and teachers at the Beseri Anak Permata Negara Centre in Padang Besar, Perlis, today.

She said a pilot project was carried out recently, involving conducting IQ tests on 47 Permata children nationwide where three obtained a score of more than 129, and eight had above average scores.

Rosmah said these questions were being converted into web format for the planned website which the general public can use to test their children.

She said those who obtained excellent scores would be sent to a special camp at UKM this December.

The project is in cooperation with the National Child Development Research Centre of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

In a related development, Rosmah said she hoped to set up Anak Permata centres in every parliamentary constituency nationwide.

Currently, there are almost 800 Permata centres nationwide, involving more than 17,000 children.

Rosmah, accompanied by the Perlis Menteri Besar's wife, Nor Aswana Omar, arrived at the Beseri Anak Permata Negara Centre at 11.50am and spent about half an hour meeting the parents and responding to their questions.
