The National Audit Department says the recent reports of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on 1MDB were not based on the department's interim audit report on the company.

"The WSJ report is not related to the 1MDB interim audit report. The National Audit Department is not the source of information to the WSJ report," the department's deputy director of research Masiah Ahmad said in an email reply to Malaysiakini .

Last Friday, the WSJ reported that documents from Malaysian investigators have revealed that US$700 million, allegedly originating from 1MDB, were deposited in Najib's private bank accounts in Malaysia.

The transactions allegedly took place on two occasions, once in March 2013, before the 13th general election, and again in early 2015.

Najib has denied receiving such funds while WSJ has stood by its story.

In March, the Audit Department was commissioned by Najib to audit 1MDB's books, following widespread allegation of irregularities in the company's finances.

An interim report is expected to be shown to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday. The document is not likely to be made public.

Apart from investigations by the Audit Department and PAC, a special task force comprising investigators from Bank Negara, the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been set up to investigate 1MDB.

According to the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail, the task force has obtained documents related to allegations that money was transferred into Najib's bank accounts.
