'Hold emergency Parliament sitting for PAC'

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has called for an emergency Parliament sitting to reappoint members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP, said the sitting should be held before Merdeka Day on August 31.

This was after the PAC's investigation into 1MDB was stalled after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak appointed four of its members, including chairperson, into the government.

The Dewan Rakyat speaker had since declared the PAC cannot proceed with its investigation until a new chairperson is appointed .

Lim ( photo ) said this should be among the measures needed to restore Najib's credibility and trustworthiness.

"I advise the prime minister to listen to the genuine voices on the ground, and not the air-conditioned hubbub of the ministerial 'spin doctors'," he said.

Explain source of RM2.6 billion

Lim also called for the restoration of a separate but related probe by the special task force which was looking into the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's private bank accounts.

He said the other measures should include the restoration of all key officers in the special task force including sacked attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail as its head and halt the government's campaign of accusing people being out to topple the government for asking questions about the RM2.6 billion.

He also called on Najib ( photo ) to explain the source of the RM2.6 billion and where it had been disbursed to.

The task force, comprising the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bank Negara and coordinated by the Attorney-General's Chambers, has made little progress after several of its investigators were hauled up on grounds of leaking information.

However, the MACC had confirmed the RM2.6 billion deposit into Najib's bank accounts but said they were "donations" and not from 1MDB.
