Foreign donations okay for Umno, not for others

YOURSAY ‘Umno can take money from foreign sources but no one else can do the same.’

RM2.6b Mid-East donation won't influence us: Nazri

Jesse: I suppose admitting to foreign donation is more palatable than admitting to corruption.

Political financing from foreign sources is widely seen as illegal, especially given that the government has often attacked the opposition for getting foreign help to ostensibly topple the government.

It would appear that it is okay for foreign sources to support an ‘illegitimate’ government to stay in power. What a lot of "bullshit", as former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz thinks Malaysians are idiots to swallow this garbage. It appears that Umno can take money from foreign sources but no one else can do the same.

Odin Tajué: Nazri, you can tell your tall tale to your uninformed kampung folk in some godforsaken place. They will believe you - and not because they are stupid but that they are ignorant due to not having access to alternative sources of information.

You and we out here all know the RM2.6 billion transferred into PM Najib Razak's personal bank accounts was never a donation. Two years passed and not one of you even in the cabinet and supreme council knew about it.

Najib hid the fact from all of you that he had received the astronomical sum of money. Why did he do that if it was a donation?

You came to know about it only after the exposés by The Wall Street Journal , the Sarawak Report and The Edge . If you think we believe you, then you are more imbecilic than a village idiot.

Hibiscus: RM2.6 billion is a very, very huge sum of money. If the amount is a donation, the donor must be disclosed to Bank Negara. The central bank will check if the money is for money laundering purpose.

Because this unusually large sum was deposited into the PM's personal accounts, Malaysians are naturally worried that their PM could have compromised the security and sovereignty of their country, especially since Najib has openly declared he adopts a policy of "You help me, I help you" in much of his dealings.

To allay the fears of the rakyat, it is necessary for Najib to disclose the name of the generous donor.

Najib must make it his highest priority to do so without delay, as increasingly he is seen to be an economic liability to the country, and may even be considered a security risk.

WDA: Nazri said, "Money going into the prime minister's accounts is more transparent than if he had been given cash."

Seriously? Do you know how much in volume and weight RM2.6 billion is? That is 26 million RM100 or seven million US$100 notes. In other words, many, many suitcases filled with cash.

Najib or the donor can't carry that much money in cash on his own especially if you want to bring that on a flight.

The PM's "yes" men and women are really not sounding very intelligent in their desperate bid to justify their boss’ RM2.6 billion "donation" debacle.

Anonymous_1421806811: Nazri, you've got it all wrong. It's not about influencing us or Malaysia but Najib. You wouldn't have known about the RM2.6 billion deposit until WSJ exposed it.

Only a fool would believe that the donation comes with no strings attached. If the donor is sincere about "helping" Umno, Najib could easily insist the money be deposited in the party’s account.

We are extremely concerned about what Najib could have compromised in order to secure the loan. By all definitions, it is corruption and if you don't believe it, the results of the next GE will show you what the people believe.

Real Truth: As Mahathir said, the donation is a figment of imagination. No donor of this amount will ever give such amount of money anonymously, when there are many Muslim nations that are poorer than Malaysia.

You have to keep on lying to cover one miserable lie. And you can't even convince your own party cadre.

Aries46: After raiding, arresting and harassing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigators, what is so difficult to get them to say that the RM2.6 billion was a donation?

Nazri, if you want the money bad enough, you can give a hundred reasons why it is good for you and why you should have it. But if it is illegal money or from a questionable source, that reason alone is enough to reject it.

That is what Malaysians are doing. If the RM2.6 billion was actually a donation for Umno, there is no reason why it was kept hidden in Najib's personal account and even from his deputy until it was exposed by Sarawak Report and WSJ.

With the 1MDB detractors like DPM and attorney-general, and the special task force and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) probes out of the way, it is now one man and his drum beaters' word against that of Malaysians. So who is more believable?

Supercession: The claim that the billions are from the Middle East is an unsubstantiated claim. The desperate attempt to turn that claim into truth will not make it true.

In all likelihood, it is not from the Middle East but from 1MDB. That means you took money from us, and there's no forgiveness for that.

Eagle: Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan says the donation was from a number of individuals, Khairy Jamaluddin said the donation was from one person, and now Nazri said the donation was from an Arab country.

See how the Umno story changes from day to day. Perhaps next, the donation was from an Arab country with links to Israel.

Too many laws broken by RM2.6b ‘donation’
