MCA Wanita: M’sia needs responsible leaders, not populists

Wanita MCA reiterated that the Bersih 4 rally is unnecessary and that it will not achieve anything, except to give Malaysia a bad name, as well as endanger the public if the situation were to get out of control.

Wanita MCA Chairperson Heng Seai Kie said she had received many calls and messages from parents on the eve of Bersih 4, who had expressed their frustration and worries; frustrated because their children refused to listen to them and insisted on attending the Bersih 4 rally.

They were also worried for their safety because the rally had been declared illegal, more so when they saw the racist flyers being distributed.

"As a mother myself, I too understand and sympathise with their agony. I too am equally worried and frustrated even though none of my family members are going to Bersih 4.

"Therefore, I can only advise these parents to pray hard that the rally will be conducted peacefully and is free of violence, and that no one will get hurt."

Heng ( photo ) said in a statement that this did not mean that she supported the Bersih 4.0 rally, but her stand was out of love and care and love for the country, knowing that many Malaysians and as well as innocent children were there.

'Never supported Bersih'

She also listed her reasons why she has never supported Bersih as follows:

1) We have not trusted the sincerity of Bersih's leaders since Ambiga Sreenavasan's time, as they had allowed the opposition to hijack the movement for its own personal political agenda (we must remember that Ambiga had been promised a senatorship and a deputy minister's post by Pakatan before GE13, and that her picture and name was included in Pakatan's proposed Cabinet).

2) The integrity of the current Bersih chairperson, Maria Chin Abdullah ( photo ), is also equally questionable as she had insisted on holding the rally on the eve of our national day and at the same venue as well, i.e. Dataran Merdeka, instead of having it before or after the celebrations so as to avoid colliding with our national day celebrations.

3) We also do not believe in holding street rallies to save Malaysia, as we believe that it will not help to resolve any problems, and that there are many other ways to voice one’s opinions.

Heng added at the moment, their main concern is not on whether the rally is illegal or not, but rather, the safety of the public.

"In this, we commend our police for their good job and efforts to protect public safety and ensure a 100 percent peaceful procession.

"Meanwhile, we also urge all political leaders and influential figures to be cautious about their comments because in our nation's moment of crisis, what we need are responsible leaders, not populists."
