Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has proposed to arrange for key witnesses to be questioned by Swiss investigators on the 1MDB issue, according to the Swiss Office of the Attorney-General (OAG).

In a statement, the OAG said a meeting at taken place between Apandi and his Swiss counterpart Michael Lauber in Zurich today, where Apandi had made the offer.

“The Swiss authorities have reminded that, in the Swiss system, the investigation has for objective to establish the truth, and that the cooperation of Malaysia is crucial.

“The Swiss authorities have welcomed the proposition of Malaysia to arrange for key witnesses to be heard by the Swiss investigators after the Malaysian authorities received the respective formal request,” it said.

It added that the bilateral meeting was centred on mutual cooperation between both countries, as well as the 1MDB case, and took place during the general meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors in Zurich.

Swiss authorities are currently investigating two 1MDB executives and ‘persons unknown’ for suspected corruption of foreign officials, suspected misconduct in public office, and suspected money laundering.

The proceedings are based on two suspicious transaction reports lodged by the Money Laundering Reporting Office (of) Switzerland (MROS).

It has frozen tens of millions of US dollars held in Swiss banks as part of the investigation, although 1MDB had said that the account is not theirs.

‘Persons unknown’ is a term used by Swiss authorities when they are unsure who else might be involved in the case.

Apart from the Swiss, UK authorities are also investigating suspected money laundering involving 1MDB.
