Don't spook the market, Rahman Dahlan tells banker

BN strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan today urged a banker against making Instagram posts that can spook the market.

"However politically tempting it is, a banker must refrain from making statements which only add to anxiety of the market. That's paramount.

"Using Instagram to discuss economic issues of great impact to Malaysia is not wise. Use official platform. Don't trivialise the issues," he tweeted today.

Rahman did not mention any names, but it is quite clear he was criticising CIMB group boss Nazir Abdul Razak.

The housing, local government, and urban wellbeing minister retweeted a message saying a screenshot of his rants should be sent to Nazir.

He also said that the banker in question was part of an economic committee.

Nazir, who sits on the special economic committee formed by his brother, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, has used the social media platform to air his concerns about current events.

This includes sharing a graphic that Malaysia's credit rating should be "junk status".

Rahman said the banker was free to air his views once or twice, but should refrain from making repeated comments as this might scare off investors.

This includes expressing concern about debt ridden sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.

"Everyone knows his stand about 1MDB from the beginning. No problem. But let's not overdo it to the point of affecting the market!" he tweeted in reply to another Twitter user.

Rahman however agreed that 1MDB's debts must be solved.

Earlier this month, Nazir questioned what kind of message the fund was sending by denying a former adviser information.

This was in regards to Abdul Samad Alias' decision to quit from the 1MDB advisory board, claiming his repeated requests for information over six months were denied.

Najib has promised to greatly reduce 1MDB's debts by year end.
