Electoral watchdog Bersih has revealed a breakdown of the funds it garnered from donations and sales of paraphernalia.

Following the amount spent on the 34-hour Bersih 4 rally, the watchdog has an excess of close to RM2 million, which it plans to use for other activities, including voter education, court costs and training costs.

This, however, led to Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang posting a series of tweets, which among others, questioned if the activities cited included foreign trips.

"Bersih said the donation was meant to organise Bersih 4 rally... Now, they are gonna use excess RM2 million on something else. Morality?" he said.

"... Can organisers use (the sum collected) for other things at their pleasure? That’s my question," he added.

Tan, who is a lawyer, said there must be stricter laws to govern donation.

"Purpose of soliciting donation should be clear and money received only be used for that (purpose). Nothing else," he added.

Based on the comments regarding the issue, Tan's said the logic of those who are pro-opposition is that if donation is solicited, and there is excess funds, it can used for other things.

"Go holiday?" he asked in a sarcastic swipe.

After revealing the break down of its funds which totalled RM2,647,361.74, Bersih challenged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to do the same.

This was in reference to the RM2.6 billion deposited into the prime minister's account, which has been described as a political donation from a Middle Eastern source.
