Details of the just concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) will be revealed to the public in a month, along with the Cost Benefit Analysis reports, International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed promised today.

"In a month's time, the contents of the agreement will be revealed to the public. The Cost Benefit Analysis will also be prepared and announced," he said in a Facebook posting last night.

Both the TPPA and the analyses will be tabled in Parliament in two months, he added.

He also reminded that Malaysia has two years to ratify the agreement and in that period, is able to reject or accept the TPPA.

The TPPA is a sweeping trade agreement between 12 countries including Malaysia.

The negotiations were concluded two days ago in Atlanta, US.

Mustapa said in his post that the Malaysian government has not yet signed the TPPA as this will require final confirmation from Parliament.

"The ones to make the decision to sign or not to sign (the TPPA) will be Parliament members," he said.

The TPPA as well as its secretive negotiations have received a slew of criticisms from civil society groups for ignoring consumer rights while further empowering global multi-national corporations.

'Consider before rejecting'

Many have called for the full contents of the TPPA to be revealed to the public.

Mustapa had previously said that Malaysian concerns and sensitivities will be considered in the TPPA.

He elaborated in his post that not everything can be perfect and that one must consider such decisions thoroughly.

"Everything we do has its pros and cons. There is nothing in this world that is 100 percent perfect.

"If there are more cons than pros, we reject. But if there are more pros than cons, we have to consider carefully before we reject," he said.
