The Conference of Rulers’ urging for investigations into 1MDB to be wrapped up and wrongdoers punished must be respected, said Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

“That is their view, and we must respect it,” he said curtly when asked at a conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The Conference of Rulers on Tuesday urged the government to wrap up all probes into 1MDB and to take actions against wrongdoers, to revive public trust.

It also urged all responsible to cooperate in investigations.

The rare, strongly-worded decree was seen by several quarters as a rebuke against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and a sign that the rulers have no confidence in his leadership.

1MDB is Najib's brainchild. Najib is also chairperson of the 1MDB board of advisors.

However, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said it is unfair to put words in the rulers' mouths.

He said if the rulers wanted Najib to go, they could have expressedly said so.
