MP: Bersih chief to be charged, but will red shirts face music?

Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching has decried the police's move to charge Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah under the Peacefully Assembly Act next Tuesday while organisers of a counter-protest dubbed the red shirts rally remain at large.

"As a matter of fact, 26 police reports were lodged against the red shirts rally and 15 investigation papers have been opened for offences under Penal Code, Peaceful Assembly Act, Sedition Act, and Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

"In order to show that there is no selective prosecution, Deputy Prime Minister cum Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi needs to tell us what is the outcome of police investigations, and if anyone will be charged over the red shirts rally in the near future," she said in a statement today.

Teo said she was shocked by plans to charge Maria under Section 9(5) of the Peacefully Assembly Act for allegedly not giving notice for the August 30 and 31 rally.

"Bersih 4 was the most successful rally in Malaysian history. It was the longest street demonstration and attracted 500,000 people to take part.

"Despite the historical turnout, the rally was remarkably peaceful and harmonious," said Teo.

Teo cited a parliamentary reply that the 34-hour Bersih rally only required police to mobilise 191 officers and 2,419 policemen at a cost of RM2,737,400 million.

In contrast, she said the half-day red shirts rally on Sept 16 saw police mobilising 263 officers and 3,648 policemen at a cost of RM4,500,927.50.

"It is obvious that if any legal action needs to be taken, it should be taken against the organiser of the red shirts rally, and not the committee of Bersih 4," she said.
