Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar tonight announced that cops are boosting security amid reports of an imminent terrorist threat in Malaysia, as world leaders gather for the Asean summit.

Khalid said although the reported imminent terrorist threat is unconfirmed, police are not taking any chances.

"There have been reports of imminent terrorist threats in Malaysia. At this point, I would like to underline that they have yet to be confirmed.

"However, security forces are taking all possible precautions and there is no room for complacency.

"There is no greater priority than the safety of the Malaysian people and all our guests," he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Khalid confirmed a leaked police communique on a meeting between Abu Sayyaf and Islamic State elements which claimed that they had despatched suicide bombers to Sabah and Kuala Lumpur.

Khalid had said he regretted the leak of sensitive information but vowed to prevent any such attacks from taking place.

In the statement tonight, Khalid said the series of attacks by militants in France, Egypt, Lebanon, and the Philippines also merited increased security.

"The Royal Malaysian Police have intensified the existing comprehensive security arrangement for the Asean and related summits in Kuala Lumpur.

"Security checks at all entry and exit pointed to Malaysia have been stepped up.

"Furthermore as announced by the chief of Defence Force general Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, military personnel will also be working with us as part of a joint operation to ensure maximum security during the Asean Summit," he said.

Khalid said terrorism and violent extremism have no place in Malaysia and police will not cease to hunt down and deal who seeks to undermine the peace and stability of the country.
