Better packages for agricultural products under TPPA

Malaysia has secured better packages for agricultural products under the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

The Agriculture and Agro-Based Industris Ministry, in a written reply to a question by Hasan Arifin (BN-Rompin), said one of them was the elimination of duties on important export commodities such as palm oil and agro-food products.

“The TPPA will not allow any member country to impose export subsidies on agricultural products exported to TPPA countries.

“This is to prevent TPPA member countries to manipulate the prices of agricultural products in the global market,” it said.

The statement said the view that agricultural products imported from the US would be cheaper after the TPPA agreement was signed and the high subsidy provided by its agricultural sector, was inaccurate.
