Penang government welcomes PR1MA projects

The DAP-led Penang government has welcomed two applications from PR1MA Corporation Malaysia to develop affordable housing under the 1Malaysia People's Housing Programme (PR1MA) in the state.

State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairperson Jagdeep Singh Deo said this was following a meeting between him and PR1MA Corporation officers in August last year.

"We received the applications in December last year for two affordable housing projects under PR1MA in Batu Ferringhi and Bukit Gelugor with a total of 2,644 units," he said in his keynote address at the Penang International Property Summit 2016 in George Town today.

However, he said, the projects were subject to all technical requirements being complied with.

"We are waiting for the proposal plans from PR1MA on the two projects and they will be approved if they meet the stipulated conditions of affordable homes," he said.

PR1MA was established under the PR1MA Act 2012 to plan, develop, construct and maintain high quality housing with lifestyle concepts for middle-income households in key urban centres.

PR1MA homes are targeted for middle-income Malaysians who are over 21 years of age and do not own more than one property for the individual or household and have an average monthly household income of between RM2,500 and RM10,000.

Jagdeep Singh said the Penang government had 12 affordable housing projects in the pipeline which will see some 22,512 units of low-cost, low-medium-cost and affordable housing in the five districts of the state.

He said the first phase of the Bandar Cassia project in the Seberang Perai Selatan district, with a total of 520 units of affordable housing, was due for completion by the end of this year.
