Hadi now changing stance on hudud, says Amanah

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang appears to have changed his stance on hudud – now he is focusing more on the general agenda of strengthening the federal constitution, says Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

Its Perak deputy Youth leader Mohd Fitri Asmuni said Hadi has toned down his stance on hudud after the Islamic party has joined forces with little-known Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) to form a third political bloc.

"When asked about PAS' main agenda, which is hudud, after the formation of the third political bloc... Hadi has said the Islamic party will focus more on the general agenda of strengthening the existing (federal) constitution," he said in a statement.

Mohd Fitri said Hadi has adopted the same position as former sidelined PAS leaders who left the Islamic party to form Amanah after their stand was ridiculed by Hadi and his conservative pro-Ulama faction.

"They (former PAS leaders) never rejected hudud. They are only of the view that PAS should focus on the general agenda agreed upon with its then Pakatan Rakyt allies such as on graft, abuse of power, the economy and poverty.

"However, their views were discredited and their loyalty to PAS belittled," said Mohd Fitri.

But today, he said, PAS has adopted the same views as Amanah, which is a departure from its once aggressive hudud approach.

"Maybe, the PAS leaders have just woken up from their slumber to the reality that in Malaysia, there are more priorities that must be fought for than just focusing on hudud."

He said while previously PAS has stated that it was pointless capturing Putrajaya if Islamic laws are not implemented, things may have changed for the Islamic party now.

"Today, PAS has agreed to team up with Ikatan whose position is that the implementation of hudud must be in line with the rakyat's wishes.”

He pointed out that PAS seems more inclined to listen to Ikatan, while never giving any consideration to similar views expressed by Amanah.
