Johor MB says causeway replacement up to federal gov't

Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the state government has decided to leave the Johor Causeway issue to the federal government.

"It is not something new and our stand is clear. The time has come to replace the Johor Causeway," he told reporters after opening a Health Community Carnival in Pasir Gudang, Johor Baru today.

Mohamed Khaled said decision on the Johor Causeway could be a subject of discussion between leaders of Malaysia and Singapore at their next retreat.

Asked whether the Johor Causeway will be on the agenda, he said the annual meeting is about bilateral ties between both countries and the agenda is set by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong.

"Our stand is very clear. If Kuala Lumpur and Singapore agree (to replace the Johor Causeway), we (the state government) agree to it."

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, recently suggested that the Johor Causeway be replaced.

Sultan Ibrahim said traffic flow in Johor Baru will improve after the Johor Causeway is replaced.

The 1.05km Johor Causeway which links Johor Baru in Johor to Woodlands in Singapore was built in 1923.
