Adenan would be clever if he had better democratic policies

YOURSAY | ‘Once again they are trying to beat Umno by playing Umno's rules.’

Adenan’s three clever moves to win the Sarawak election

Amateur: Many people would opine that Sarawak CM Adenan Satem's moves are unscrupulous and outrageous, contrary to University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute director James Chin’s remark of them being clever.

Besides the advantage from alleged gerrymandering and misleading mainly the rural folk, Adenan banned the entry of opposition heavyweights into Sarawak. The number of entry bans is unprecedented.

Obviously, his instinct for dictatorship is more overwhelming (than that for liberal democracy).

Senyum Kambeng: What's is so clever about racist and non-democratic practices? You are clever if you have better democratic policies and ideas.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that BN will get two-thirds of the seats. The reasons which have very much to do with BN's allegedly unfair and undemocratic practices have already been spelled out by other political observers.

The opposition is fighting an election with one-and-a-half hands tied and this is clear for all to see.

The Analyser: How long will it take for Malaysian politicians to learn the need to offer something more to the electorate than the old and very tired trio of personalities/race/religion? The opposition has done nothing worthwhile to attract the voters.

All they seem to do is sit in dark corners counting votes and fighting with one another, and of course looking for someone to blame for the loss that they are about to incur.

Once again, they are trying to beat Umno by playing by Umno's rules, yet even the dumbest should know that they have never had one win at that game.

Is the ego of the Malaysian male so blind that it cannot see that the only way you will ever beat Umno is by being smarter than they are and by having principles?

MariKitaUbah: I think the election results will be very unpredictable this time around.

The 1MDB issue is a national issue that affects every Malaysian, whether you like it or not. This is due to the fact that the BN government will have to bail out 1MDB using taxpayers’ money.

The PM has not shown or proven that he is innocent. Sarawakians are keeping quiet and the election results will tell all.

FellowMalaysian: Owing to the inability of the opposition parties to resolve their seat allocation dispute, which has brought about clashes between DAP and PKR in six constituencies, this will likely affect the sentiments of the voters, especially those in bigger towns such as Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.

While the turnouts in these areas will be muted, it will nevertheless probably see DAP repeating its previous gains in the 2011 election.

As rightly pointed out by James Chin, DAP has built up much ground support and network, especially in the semi-urban and non-Muslim bumiputera areas and it has made quite an impressive foray into these growth centres.

The results of the election are important to Malaysians in the peninsula as well, as it will gauge the sentiments of the people, in this case from Sarawak, towards 1MDB and related issues.

Keng Liang: BN has always enjoyed strong mandate under the previous chief minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud.

What has Taib achieved in negotiating with the federal government? Agreeing to the goods and services tax (GST)? Agreeing to the cabotage policy? So why the need for a stronger mandate now?

Rakyat Kingfisher: If Sarawakians vote for BN, they deserve to suffer from further bad economic policies from the federal government.

With our current debt ratio to GDP at 56 percent, and national debt at RM560 billion (1MDB debt is not even counted here as it is considered private debt), our country is going to sink very soon.

Ketuanan Rakyat: Please remember, a vote for BN is a vote for Najib Abdul Razak's and the Umnoputras’ allegedly corrupt practices.

Sarawak voters should for once vote out BN and save themselves and Malaysians from the Umnoputras.

Countdown: The broken Pakatan Harapan and the selfishness of these individuals is a big let-down. We have corrupt clowns on one side and selfish individuals fighting for glory on the other side.

Anonymous #95676433: Whatever the outcome of the election, all Sarawakians who believe in democracy should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for the ban on opposition leaders from campaigning in the election.

Where is the honour in the victory?
