PAS veep: Don't blame us for Pakatan Harapan's quarrel

PAS should not be blamed for Pakatan Harapan's failure to hold its presidential council meeting, says the party vice-president Idris Ahmad.

The Harapan meeting, to decide its candidates for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, is yet to be held, even though BN and PAS are set to announce their candidates on Friday.

"What does it have to do with us? When a wife and husband quarrel, you can't possibly expect the neighbours to decide whether they should divorce or not.

"That is somebody else's family affair. We will not interfere in the family affairs of other people," Idris is quoted as saying in a Sinar Harian report today.

Harapan last night postponed its presidential meeting for the second time, saying that it was still waiting for PAS to respond to on whether the Islamic party was prepared to compromise with the coalition in the by-elections.

PAS views Parti Amanah Negara, its splinter party, as an enemy and has refused to make any concession.

As a compromise, PKR proposed that PAS withdraws from the Sungai Besar by-election to allow PKR contest there, while Pakatan Harapan will make way for PAS to have a straight fight with the BN in Kuala Kangsar.

However, PAS has publicly insisted that it will contest both seats.

With the PKR-PAS negotiations becoming increasingly unlikely to yield results, Amanah has made public its intention to contest in both seats, for which DAP has given its backing.

The by-elections follow the passing of the two incumbent MPs in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.

The by-elections have been fixed for June 18, with the nominations to take place on June 5.
