Suspecting graft, Klang MP Charles Santiago and a group of Klang residents have lodged a report against the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) over the floods that hit the city on May 15.

The group said the flood had inundated about two-thirds of the Klang parliamentary constituency and affected about 20 residential areas, as well as businesses.

“We ask that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigates whether there is any evidence of bribery and misappropriation in MPK’s engineering department.

“We ask that the tender system, quotations, work quality, tender system announcements, tender notification publications, contract awards announcements and prices paid (are inspected).

“Therefore, we ask that the MACC investigates the possibility of graft and misappropriation in MPK, particularly in its engineering department, Department of Drainage and Irrigation and the Public Works Department and provide us the feedback soon,” the group said in their report.

The report was lodged at the Klang MACC branch office this morning by Charles, Perlabuhan Klang state constituency coordinator Azmizam Zaman Huri and the heads of six Klang residents’ associations.

It states that floods have been a recurring problem in Klang over the past 10 years

This is despite engagement between the residents’ associations and the municipality’s engineering department over the years, and various past efforts to tackle the floods.

The report also quotes a parliamentary reply by Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Hamim Samuri which, among others, cited clogged drains as the cause of the floods.

Hamim was also quoted as saying that the MPK did not follow the government’s Environmentally Friendly Drainages Manual and did not collect rubbish according to schedule.

In addition, the deputy minister purportedly said that the MPK had failed to ensure that developers in Klang followed the Erosion Sediment Control Plan during their construction works.
