Spurn off your suitor, don't be cheated again, DAP tells voters

LIVE BLOG DAY 9 | After a star-studded weekend, the campaign in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar slowed down again, with few high-profile government programmes scheduled for today.

The most notable BN leader to hit the campaign trail will be Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, who will be breaking fast in Sungai Besar.

Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is also in Sungai Besar, while DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang is in Kuala Kangsar.

Jamal: 'Cina babi' campaign shows opposition running out of ideas

11pm: Sekinchan - Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Yunos dismisses the opposition's 'Cina babi' campaign against him as being irrelevant and ineffective.

Jamal also says the smear campaign against him is because the opposition fails to find any faults with Budiman or local issues to raise.

"So the only other way is to slander me and to link me to allegations that I am a racist leader and other things.

"But most of the people in Sungai Besar know me better than they know them (Amanah) because they don't have any machinery," he says when met at an MCA ceramah in Sekinchan.

Jamal denies saying it is okay to say 'Cina babi' because Chinese eats pigs, as stated in several billboards put up around Sekinchan.

Spurn off your suitor, don't be cheated again, DAP tells voters

10pm: Kampung Baru Jerlun – At a Pakatan Harapan ceramah, Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming urges voters not to be cheated again.

"If you are a beautiful woman (voters) and you were cheated to sleep (with a man), it is okay because you know nothing.

"But, when you are 68-year-old 50 years later, someone still come and ask you to sleep with him.

"By the age of 68, still a beautiful woman, you still want to sleep with him?”

"Wake up, please, and (say no) thank you," he says to the laughter of a 300-strong crowd

Harping on prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor's jet riding, he says Rosmah can occupy the whole jet.

He urged the people to vote for Amanah to send Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Rosmah to Holland (a Cantonese slang meaning 'to end up badly').

He said the people had to foot the bill for Rosmah's jet riding, but only received 10kg of rice from MCA and 5kg from Gerakan.

"Are you so cheap?" he asks.

"In Jerlun, you pay RM30 to do up your hair. She (Rosmah) pays RM1,200 for her hair, but this is not expensive.

"She should be charged RM2,400," he says.

Wan Azizah gives away lucky draw prizes

7pm: Pasir Panjang, Sg Besar – Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail gives away small appliances as part of a lucky draw.

Many of the winners are children who won irons, and blenders, while the top prize of a stand mixer went to a lady.

Wan Azizah then gives a light-hearted speech in which she jokes about having to learn to count in Tamil, and how she has a decent bengkang ubi recipe that not killed anyone yet.

"This man (PKR information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh) has eaten it and hasn't died, so it must be good," she quips, before urging voters to vote for Amanah candidate Azhar Abdul Shukur.

EC: Not an offence for Amanah to use logo on its flags

7pm: Kuala Kangsar – Election Commission (EC) chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah says it is not an offence under election laws for Amanah to use the logo on its flags.

"Every party had submitted to EC its party symbols, including the pattern and colour to be used in the election," he says in a statement.

"The party had applied to use two types of colour – one in colour and the other in black and white. This has been approved by Registrar of Societies," he says.

"Bear in mind that there is no need to obtain EC's approval on the use of party's flags," Abdullah (photo) adds.

An issue was raised on the different colours used on Amanah flags, he says.

PAS has earlier lodged report on this issue.

'Vote for me and I'll sing a Tamil songs for Deepavali'

5PM: Sekin Resort, Sg Besar – BN candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi promises to sing Tamil songs if Indian voters cast their ballots for him on June 18.

“If you vote for me, I will sing during Deepavali," Budiman jests with a gathering of Indian entrepreneurs in Sungai Besar, belting out a few verses and promising to sing a full song during the festival of lights.

On a more serious note, the Sungai Panjang assemblyperson says if he wins he will appoint an Indian special officer so that he can better serve the community.

Different colours: Amanah’s logo in PAS crosshairs

12.15pm: Kuala Kangsar district office - PAS' lawyer for the Kuala Kangsar by-election Mohd Zamri Ibrahim and PAS by-election candidate's representative Ali Juhari Ahmad question the logo used by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) on its flag.

Amanah's logo on its flag, they say, has an orange background while its symbol is white.

This is different from Amanah's logo on the Election Commission's (EC) website which has a white background and an orange symbol.

Admitting that election ethics do not state whether a party can modify its logo or otherwise, Zamri tells reporters that an independent candidate for the Ipoh Barat constituency during the last general election had his logo changed by the EC for modifying the logo of a horse.

"We just met an official from the EC, he said that we should lodge an official report on the matter," he says, adding that a report will be filed this evening.

"If Amanah is allowed to go on with this, it will set a precedent. After this any candidate can modify his or her logo to their liking," he says.

Tuan Ibrahim: Dr M’s support for Amanah won’t affect PAS

1pm: Simpang Lima, Sungai Besar - PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's endorsement of Pakatan Harapan's candidate in Sungai Besar will have little impact on the Islamist party.

"Based on feedback we received from Umno members, Umno rejects Mahathir.

"So I feel this (Mahathir supporting Amanah) will not impact PAS' campaigns," Tuan Ibrahim says during a press conference with PAS Sungai Besar candidate Dr Abdul Rani Osman.

He also insists that PAS has consistently been against Mahathir since the time he was prime minister.

"When he was PM we opposed him. Now he's no longer PM of course we're opposed to him," he says.

Mahathir had on Saturday for the first time openly endorsed Amanah's candidate Azhar Abdul Shukur.

Voter turnout crucial for Amanah to win

11am: DAP operations centre, Kuala Kangsar - DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang is much concerned about the voter turnout for the Kuala Kangsar by-election.

The DAP leader says there is a likelihood that the voter turnout will be lower than 84 percent as many are of the belief that the by-election will not have a large impact on the future.

He, however, argues it is a 'most important by-election' as it will determine both the country‘s political future as well as Najib Abdul Razak's position as prime minister.

"If Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is going to win, there must be a higher voter turnout, as well as a higher percentage of support," he says in a press conference today.

Meanwhile, Lim also responds to Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob who claimed the DAP leader and his son Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng reject Islam.

Lim however challenges Ismail and other BN ministers to cite a single instance from his five decades in politics where he was anti-Malay or Islam.

"If they cannot, they should stop this politics of race and hatred. In my years in politics, I've always been demonised," he adds.
