DAP has postponed its party leadership elections to allow it to focus on the next general election.

DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said this was unanimously decided by the party's central executive council (CEC) at its meeting last night.

The CEC is due for re-election on Sept 29, but the party's constitution allows internal elections to be postponed up to 18 months if a general election is due within two years.

Loke said the party would still hold its annual convention this year, on Dec 4.

The DAP leadership elections has been widely awaited as Lim Guan Eng's term as secretary-general is due to end, having served two terms in the post.

However, Lim can still contest for a post in the CEC.

The party secretary-general is currently under mounting pressure after being slapped with two corruption charges in his capacity as Penang chief minister.

DAP is not the only party to postpone its leadership elections pending the next general election.

Umno and MCA have both postponed their party elections until after the 14th general election that must be held by August 2018.
