PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said Malaysia does not need to wait for the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to determine whether funds were really misappropriated from state-owned 1MDB.

He said this was because Malaysian authorities have already determined this but are refusing to make them public.

Shamsul was responding to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low who promised action will be taken against those named by the DOJ if it was established that money from 1MDB was really misappropriated.

"Until today, the auditor-general’s report on 1MDB is still being classified as an official secret under the Official Secrets Act 1972, although whistle-blower website Sarawak Report had already published alleged excerpts from the audit report.

"We do not need to wait for the DOJ to establish if the funds were taken out from 1MDB if we have a functioning democracy to perform a check and balance on those with executive power.

"Hence, I urge the government to immediately declassify the auditor-general’s report on 1MDB," Shamsul said in a statement today.

He called Low's assurance a "pathetic cover-up" to shield the government's top official implicated in the 1MDB scandal.

Shamsul said the DOJ still made multiple references to "Malaysian Official 1" despite Malaysian authorities clearing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of wrongdoing.

The DOJ did not name "Malaysian Official 1" but described him as a senior government official who was previously investigated for receiving US$681 million by Malaysian authorities and is also a relative of Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz, who was also named in the DOJ's case.

Malaysian attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali had cleared Najib of receiving US$681 million on grounds that it was a "donation" from the Arab royal family, but the DOJ said the money came from 1MDB. Riza Shahriz is Najib's step-son.

The DOJ said that at least US$3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB and was confiscating US$1 billion in assets purportedly acquired through the stolen money.

Najib denied wrongdoing and said he had never taken public funds for personal gain.
