The police will not allow the planned #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 rally on Aug 27 to be held in Dataran Merdeka because the organiser did not get permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

"If well follow reports, DBKL did not allow (the organiser to use) Dataran Merdeka, meaning they will have to find another place where the owners will give them permission

"Eventhough time is short, they're supposed to make their request 10 days before the rally, but if the place they ask for is appropriate we will consider it.

"However, if the (venue) owner says no, then don't do it. This is like entering someone's house, if they don't give permission and we still go in, action will be taken," Khalid said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

He added that police would allow for a protest which is in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act, but warned that action would be taken if the law is violated.

Malaysiakini yesterday reported that DBKL would not approve the rally organiser's request to gather at Dataran Merdeka, proposing that the demonstration be held at Padang Merbok instead.

The #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 rally follows the US Department of Justice's damning revelations that US$3.5 billion had been stolen from 1MDB.

Of this amount, the DOJ claimed US$731 million made its way into the accounts of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1), an unnamed civil servant who is related to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's stepson Riza Aziz.

Critics said that MO1 is none other than Najib himself.

However, Najib has denied allegations of misusing public funds, saying such accusations were part of a plot to topple him.

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in 1MDB-related scandals.
