Dr M's handshake - magnanimity or cold calculated pragmatism?

YOURSAY | 'This is his last option, to work together with Anwar in order to achieve his goals.'

Mahathir: If I can work with Kit Siang, why not Anwar?

Anonymous 2431931472726726: To err is human. So in accordance with Islamic teachings, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has patched up with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

This is a great gesture and as Muslims, we must welcome his act.

Victor Johan: Bravo to Mahathir in establishing a relationship with the current united opposition front.

They will soon be changing the political landscape of Malaysia, and Umno-BN will be the disarrayed opposition front sitting in Parliament.

Justine Gow: Yes, one should spare no effort to get rid of that someone who is draining the country dry.

As far as I know, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang signalled his willingness to work with Mahathir to save the country, even in the relatively early stage of the 1MDB fiasco.

Anonymous 2431951472725044: The former PM is known for his 'mechanical rationality' attitude towards things.

When he is contemplating an issue, he will normally set aside his personal feelings and focus wholly on his objectives and interests in making decisions, choosing what is best to achieve his targets.

Simply put, Mahathir's actions have been closely tied to his objectives and interests.

Anonymous 2432071472611352: Mahathir seems less confident that the people will be with him in his mission to topple PM Najib Razak.

This is his last option, to work together with Anwar in order to achieve his personal goals.

GE14Now: Mahathir, you were the one who once said Anwar was morally unfit. You got him convicted on trumped-up charges that would have been thrown out of any decent court in the Western world.

You are the one who has caused so much continued suffering for him and his family because the same evil party that you once led has again played the same (sodomy) song that you composed.

The question is not whether you can work with Anwar. You do not have the moral right to ask that question, Dr M. The question is whether Anwar will work with you.

And given the nature of your character, I would be very careful about being on your side, for you have no qualms about 'sticking it to someone's behind' once you have used them.

If this sounds like I do not like or respect you, it is because I neither like nor respect you. But that said, I detest Umno and Najib even more.

Kangkung: Not until Mahathir admits to having persecuted Anwar by sacking him and jailing him, there won't be true reconciliation.

Mahathir is only shaking Anwar's hand because he has no other choice. If Najib has resigned, do you think Mahathir will even meet with Anwar?

PSM moots common logo for opposition as field gets crowded

CQ Muar: I absolutely agree with Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) leader S Arutchelvan that a common logo for the opposition is inevitable to pursue a common goal.

This is to rule out any possible confusion among members of the public, especially the less informed and rural folk.

Thus, a common identity is to dispel such likelihood similar to that of BN. Voters would not be left wondering which particular party he or she ought to vote for from the various component parties.

This is considering not everyone is familiar with the two new parties, such as Amanah and Bersatu.

In view of the next general election, which is just around the corner, it is hoped the opposition coalition will not waste further time dwelling on the matter.

Cogito Ergo Sum: Yes, good idea, but the opposition parties are so divided, it would take years to decide on a common logo.

Moreover, a common logo can also work against the opposition. Think about it.

Ericlcc: This common logo would take more than 10 years to get registered, unless the opposition comes into power sooner.

JD Lovrenciear: Reviewing the long standing lone-ranger history of the opposition parties and an imminent early election date, it is not only too late in the day to consider Arutchelvan's well-intended proposition, but it may further give additional ammunition for BN troopers to blow up the untested coalition's election manifesto that is still in the oven, most likely.

What would be strategic is that all aligned opposition parties agree to feature a combined logo that portrays the formidable truth of 'unity in diversity'.

Sarawakian: A common logo is sensible, provided parties using the logo engage in one-to-one fights with BN in GE14. Otherwise, it will be a disaster.
