I'm not afraid to fail, says 'opposition middleman' Muhyiddin

While admitting that the task of whipping the disparate opposition parties into one cohesive force is a daunting one, Muhyiddin Yassin said he is game for the challenge and not afraid to fail.

"I am not afraid to fail. It is better to have failed after giving it all I have got, than to fail without even trying," the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) pro-tem president told Sinar Harian yesterday.

"For me, this is a challenge. If Bersatu can play the role of a political party with me as the bridge or the factor that will bind (the opposition) for good, I am willing," he said.

According to the Malay daily, Muhyiddin expressed confidence in Bersatu's ability to play the middleman role in pulling the opposition together, based on the positive feedback he said he received in his meetings with other opposition parties.

"In my latest meeting with PAS, they seem ready to be open to cooperation. It just requires an arrangement to address challenges and give form to the cooperation in specific issues.

"On this side, (PKR, Amanah and DAP) we have no problem with uniting in a bigger framework. Our efforts will continue and we hope that in the end we will find common ground, in whatever form," Muhyiddin is quoted as saying.

The major driving force

The former deputy prime miniser said that the rakyat's hope for change is the major driving force behind his continuing political struggle in Bersatu.

"What I am doing now, I have never dreamt of in my 45 years in politics. But it is all for the sake of saving Malaysia.

"If this notion is shared by the rakyat, we cannot fail them and depend only on the existing leadership.

"We must try, for everywhere the rakyat have voiced their concern. They do not want a failed state with corrupt leaders.”

Yesterday, Muhyiddin also met up with Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the jailed former opposition leader's court case in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

He has been making the rounds to all the opposition parties to promote the idea of a grand opposition coalition.
