KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Friendly fire at Umno AGM

After days of attacks against Umno's enemies by successive speakers at the party’s annual general assembly (AGM), coalition ally MCA suddenly found itself a target.

Jasin MP Ahmad Hamzah urged the Transport Ministry, a portfolio traditionally held by MCA, to be given to the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Khairul Azwan Harun said MCA should not overreact to Umno's criticism and instead focus on attacking rival party DAP.

While the BN Chinese party received flak, Umno delegates heaped praise on the government's business deals with China.

Former Umno supreme council leader Saifuddin Abdullah, who is now with PKR, criticised the racial undertone of Umno president Najib Abdul Razak's speech at the AGM.

However, Umno deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed claims that the speech would lead to "racial disaster".

More banks fined over 1MDB scandal

Standard Chartered Bank and Coutts & Co Ltd were slapped with multi-million dollar fines by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for breaching anti-money laundering rules in their dealings with 1MDB.

MAS also proposed a 10-year ban on former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner from involvement in the country's capital market management for his role in the 1MDB scandal.

Orang Asli vow to strike back

The Orang Asli in Gua Musang vowed to erect more anti-logging blockades after the state authorities dismantled the structures and arrested 54 of them.

The Kelantan Forestry Department denied it was being "cruel" in its handling of the state’s standoff with the Orang Asli.

Meanwhile, PAS central committee member Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor accused the Orang Asli's lawyer Siti Kasim of harbouring an ulterior motive against the PAS-led Kelantan government.

Prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor, in response to critics, said funds for early childhood programme Permata did not end up in her own handbag.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar told cartoonist Zunar to draw "Donald Duck" instead of cartoons "insulting" national leaders.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad accused Putrajaya of giving out citizenships in exchange for votes.

Police revealed the bodyguard who killed his own boss and two innocent bystanders in a shooting rampage in Penang had a military background.

The Low Yat phone thief who triggered a riot at the shopping district of Bukit Bintang last year was discharged of assault after a witness withdrew from the case.

Looking ahead

It is the last day of the Umno AGM, where party's top leaders will deliver their winding-up speeches.

Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua is expected to be questioned by police for his speech at the Bersih 5 rally, while his DAP colleague, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, will also be quizzed on the 'Bebas Maria' rally.
