'Umno doesn't practice corruption'; Umno-PAS cooperation

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

'Umno doesn't practice corruption'

Umno is not losing sleep over the warning from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) that it has corrupt politicians in its crosshairs, as the party does not indulge in corruption, its secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said.

However, MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad's warning to corrupt politicians would be pointless if it does not include "Malaysian Official 1", according to DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang.

Meanwhile, the MACC chief said the commission could not upgrade its technology or equipment for the next three years due to budget constraints, though Dzulkifli said this was no reason for the commission not to continue fulfilling its obligations.

No snap polls for Sabah

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak denied all talk of an impending snap election in Sabah, dismissing it as mere speculation.

He added that Umno would continue working with PAS on matters concerning Islam and Muslims, including on the launch of a Rohingya aid flotilla on Feb 3.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has dismissed any possibility of working with DAP, as the socialist democratic party does not support its Islamic cause.

More Kinibites

Former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek dissects the previous "alliance of opportunism" of PAS and DAP, which began after the tectonic shift in the national political landscape that occurred as a result of Anwar Ibrahim being dismissed as deputy prime minister in 1998.

Police have arrested the creator of the controversial "Thaipusam Spraying Group" that threatened to spray paint women who dressed "inappropriately" during the Hindu festival next month.

Four men accused of assaulting lorry driver Nasrul Faiz Zulfahmi in Bukit Antarabangsa on Jan 14 claimed trial to charges of rioting at a Magistrate's Court in Ampang this afternoon.

Looking ahead

Najib will today attend the Chinese New Year open houses held by BN component parties MCA and Gerakan.
