Gov't agency director and wife held for suspected graft

The Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today detained a government agency director under a ministry for suspected abuse of power and corruption.

According to the source, the 54-year-old man was picked up at a hotel in Bagan Lalang, Sepang at about 12 noon today.

Also held was the director's wife, 36, who is an administrative assistant in the same government agency.

The source said MACC also detained two company owners who were believed to have received contracts from the director, in Alor Setar and Shah Alam at 8.10am and 3.30pm respectively.

The director is believed to have abused his post and position to award projects to supply equipment for his agency to the interested contractors.

The source also said based on initial investigations, the suspect was believed to have received a sum of money from the contractors so that their companies would be selected again for future projects.

"The appointed contractors were also said to have used the names of several other companies when sending in their price quotation to avoid detection by the quotation selection committee," he said.

MACC is gathering information on the suspect's actions and the projects approved to date.

Selangor MACC director Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said they would be remanded to assist investigations.
