Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim held a 45-minute meeting at the Kuala Lumpur court complex this afternoon.

Speaking to reporters later, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson said despite Bersatu engaging in talks with PAS, it is committed to solidifying the opposition.

“Bersatu will join and solidify (the opposition) coalition,” he said.

"As to our meeting, we both principally agree on the current political affairs of the country, and that (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) has to go as he is selling the country," he added.

Mahathir surprised everyone with his presence at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning, and sat next to Anwar's daughter, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah, during the proceedings.

The court was hearing Anwar's defamation suit against Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Mahathir had met the jailed former opposition leader during a brief break called by the judge after witness, lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon, finished his testimony.

After the break was called, which also ended the day's proceeding, Anwar was seen smiling and approaching Mahathir who was standing at the public gallery. He shook the former premier's hands under the watchful eyes of the prison guards.

The prison guards also warned those in the public gallery not to take photographs.

Anwar was also seen joking with businessman Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who accompanied Mahathir asking, "Are you his press secretary?"

Before the proceedings started, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin also met Anwar.

Anwar's lawyer Sivarasa Rasiah has indicated to Justice Azizul Azmi Adnan in court that Mahathir and Muhyiddin may be called as witnesses.

“We are considering calling Mahathir and Muhyiddin. This is besides other confirmed witnesses in (Selangor MB) Azmin Ali, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and (former Penang deputy chief minister) Mansor Othman,” he said.

It was previously reported that Khairy and three of his witnesses, who included Lokman Noor Adam, Ali Shikh, Lenggeng assemblyperson Ishak Ismail, had testified how Anwar had plotted to topple Mahathir in 1998, to which the former opposition leader had denied when he took the stand.

Justice Azizul ordered Sivarasa and Anwar's other lawyers to file Mahathir and Muhyiddin's witness statement by Feb 16, if they chose to testify on Feb 20, the next hearing date.
