The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today congratulated Umno on its 71st anniversary celebration and called on the party to fight corruption.

"As a backbone of the country's administration and a party with most seats, (Umno) leaders have a role in formulating the policies for the administration of the country and the progress of the nation.

"As leaders, Umno members are the hope of the community to execute their responsibility and trust given to safeguard the interest and welfare (of the community)," MACC said in a statement today.

Umno leaders, the commission urged, must ensure they execute their duties with integrity and stay away from graft and abuse of power.

"Umno leaders should give emphasis on fighting corruption and abuse of power so that they can be a role model to the next generation who will take over the country.

"They will play a significant role in making progress in an ethical society that is free of corruption and abuse of power," it added.

MACC also hopes Umno will support its Anti-Corruption Revolution Moment (Gerah), a social revolution campaign that mobilises 2,000 officers monthly to go on the ground to spread the message of hating bribery, which was launched three days ago.

"MACC also hopes Umno members and leaders will be with us to clean the country from elements of bribery and abuse of power, and become the main mover to help MACC to make corruption the number one enemy in the country," it said.

Umno will have its biggest ever anniversary celebration, with an expected participation of 140,000 members nationwide at the Bukit Jalil Stadium tonight, before the party prepares for the coming general election.

The party is offering cars, bikes and other prizes in a lucky draw open to members and new members who are registered as voters on the actual celebration day today, May 11.
